Estreito da Calheta is a peaceful village well connected to Madeira’s attractions by a new network of roads and tunnels. It is on the south-west coast which is blessed with the best weather on the Island. Local attractions include Calheta’s sand beaches and marina (5 minutes drive) where you can take whale & dolphin watching trips, fishing trips or just sit outside one of the restaurants, take a coffee and watch the world go by.
This village is the home of the petrol station, an ironmonger, three banks, the chemist´s shop, the hospital, a health clinic with dentist, a physiotherapist, fitness gym. and a supermarket. There is also a considerable number of clothes shops, especially ladies shoes and accessories, a couple of restaurants and two bakeries both making and selling fresh bread and wonderful cakes (not for weight watchers!). Estrela has a taxi rank and a multi storey car park! There is also the Casa das Mudas exhibition centre that would not be out of place in Lisbon or London , well worth a visit. However, in fine Madeiran fashion, this village is not on many maps! It´s our little secret. Find it!
